Michael R. Williams

Michael R. Williams is one of the original founding partners of the firm now known as Finlayson Williams Toffer Roosevelt & Lilly LLP.

Expertise

Mr. Williams' practice is focused on all areas of business and employment litigation (trial and appellate) and bankruptcy and creditors' rights matters.  He has significant experience:

  • representing companies and individuals in business litigation in state and federal courts (plaintiffs and defendants);
  • representing companies and individuals in employment-related litigation, including sexual harassment, wrongful termination, and discrimination litigation (employers and employees);
  • defending companies and individuals who have been sued for alleged violations of the state and federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Acts and the Fair Credit Reporting Act;
  • defending companies and individuals who have been sued in bankruptcy court for receiving alleged preferences and fraudulent transfers;
  • prosecuting and opposing appeals in state and federal court (including writs);
  • prosecuting nondischargeability cases against debtors in bankruptcy cases; and
  • representing creditors (secured and unsecured) in bankruptcy cases, including claims litigation.

Mr. Williams also has significant experience representing chapter 11 debtors in all aspects of the chapter 11 reorganization process; representing chapter 7 trustees and bankruptcy estate managers; and representing buyers in transactions involving the purchase of assets from bankruptcy estates.

Prior Experience

After graduating from law school, Mr. Williams spent one year as a law clerk to United States District Judge Jon P. McCalla (Memphis, TN), and then spent time as an associate attorney in the employment litigation department of King & Ballow. Between 1998 and 2004, Mr. Williams was an associate attorney in the Irvine office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he was a member of the firm's business restructuring/reorganization and litigation practice groups.

Education

Mr. Williams graduated summa cum laude from Pepperdine University School of Law, where he was a member and associate editor of the Pepperdine Law Review. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with high honors from California State University, Fullerton.

Mr. Williams is admitted to practice in all California state and federal courts (trial and appellate courts). He is a member of the Orange County Bar Association and the Orange County Bankruptcy Forum.
